Leadership initiatives


LeadSpace | First-time Principals Programme | Principals’ Development Planning Centre (PDPC) | Principal Professional Learning Communities (PPLC) | Leading and Managing Advisory Support

These Ministry of Education initiatives provide support and development for principals and aspiring principals. The initiatives are part of the Ministry of Education’s long-term strategy to build leadership capacity in New Zealand schools.

LeadSpace

LeadSpace is the communications and information hub for New Zealand school principals. It provides support for principals in their day-to-day work (knowledge and tools areas) and their professional learning (leadership area). It also offers a secure online facility (e-Net/PEN) through which principals can connect to each other with the assistance of LeadSpace facilitators. Contact leadership@tki.org.nz.

First-time Principals Programme

This induction programme consists of a number of key components, including residential courses, online support, and mentoring. It is provided by the University of Auckland. There are online modules that support the First-time Principals Programme.

Principals’ Development Planning Centre (PDPC)

This initiative provides experienced principals with an opportunity to formulate a professional development plan based upon feedback from principal facilitators. Click here for information about PDPC.

Principal Professional Learning Communities (PPLC)

This initiative caters for 200 principals who form small networks of 4–5 principals per group. It provides ongoing professional development in a high trust, highly supportive, academically influenced, and structured environment. School principals are engaged in professional readings, reflection, and discussion regarding their complex role. The New Zealand Principal and Leadership Centre, Massey University is the provider.

Leading and Managing Advisory Support

Ongoing support to school leaders is provided through the School Support Services. Seventy to eighty leadership and management advisors across New Zealand provide in-depth support and advice to school leaders on leadership practices which improve student learning outcomes.
