Aspiring Principals pilot

Applications to take part in this programme have now closed.

About the programme

A national pilot for Aspiring Principals will run during 2008. The pilot is a programme of professional learning designed to prepare aspirants for principalship in a range of New Zealand schools.

There are 180 places available nationally. Applications are invited from teachers in all schooling sectors.

The year-long programme has been developed by the Ministry of Education, and will be coordinated regionally by the Leadership and Management Advisors attached to the six universities. Local delivery will be supported by regional steering groups of local Ministry and Principals Association personnel. Regions are based on the School Support regions.

Applicants must be approved by the regional steering groups to enter the programme.

Selection criteria

To be considered for selection applicants must provide evidence of:

  • successful teaching practice
  • recent professional learning
  • relationships with students, colleagues and community
  • leading and/or being part of a team
  • a personal commitment to leading learning.

Course content

The programme will include coursework based around a core curriculum, some of which may be delivered as part of residential courses. The learning will be personalised for aspirants, based on their needs, and will include an online component. Aspirants will carry out a leadership project in their own school. This will provide a practical element to the programme and will require the support of the school’s principal. It is suggested that the New Zealand Curriculum will be an ideal vehicle for the project.

At the end of the pilot the aspirants are expected to present the learning from their leadership project, further learning identified from the programme in their reflective journal, and take part in an exit interview with a focus on career planning. They will receive documentation based on these outcomes that can be used for application purposes.

There will be an external evaluation of the pilot. Participants must be prepared to collaborate with the researchers.
